Mercer County Commissioners Approve Creation of LGBTQIA+ Affairs Office

Trenton, NJ – On Monday, September 23rd, the Mercer County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance to establish the Office for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+) Affairs.

With this approval, Mercer County will become the fourth county in New Jersey to establish an Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs.

"In Mercer County, we represent one of the most diverse communities in New Jersey, but diversity alone is not enough. We must actively work towards greater inclusion. That’s why the passing of this ordinance, which makes space for a community that has long been excluded and marginalized, is truly historic,” said Commissioner Sam Frisby. “I believe this office will be transformative, shedding light on the darkest corners of inequity and ensuring that Mercer County stands in the gap for those who cannot stand for themselves."

Purpose of the Office

The Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs is committed to fostering equitable working and living conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals across Mercer County. It will serve as a dedicated advocate for LGBTQIA+ issues in all areas of County government.

The office will focus on the following objectives:

  • Identifying and Assessing Needs: The office will identify the needs of LGBTQIA+ residents and assess resources to promote understanding, protect civil rights, and foster unity within the community.
  • Providing Information and Referrals: It will offer information and referrals to internal and external resources and services, aimed at improving the quality of life for LGBTQIA+ residents in Mercer County.
  • Educating on Civil Rights and Protections: The office will work to educate individuals and organizations about civil rights, legal protections, and links to both government entities and nonprofit organizations.
  • Supporting Community Outreach: The office will assist the County Executive in developing community outreach initiatives designed to promote diversity, inclusion, and unity within Mercer County.
