Mercer County is committed to implementing Complete Streets on all County Roads where feasible and accommodating all residents and visitors, regardless of vehicle ownership or travel choice. Mercer County adopted its Complete Streets Resolution (Resolution No. 2012-249) on April 26, 2012. With this Resolution, the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders, now known as County Commissioners, expressed support for the County Executive’s "Complete Streets" policy for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of new and retrofitted transportation facilities to enable safe access and mobility, not only for motorists, but also for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users of all ages and abilities.

In addition to County, every single municipality in Mercer County as well as the State DOT have adopted their own Complete Streets Resolution. These resolutions commit our municipal partners as well as NJDOT to implement facilities where feasible on their respective roadways. In 2017, NJDOT released a “State of New Jersey Complete Streets Design Guide” which was followed up with a “Complete & Green Streets For All” guide in 2019.

At the Federal level, USDOT & FHWA highly encourage and at times require local jurisdictions to embrace Complete Streets. FHWA has a dedicated website (https://highways.dot.gov/complete-streets) that compiles various resources and program information.

Over the coming years, Mercer County will keep working towards implementing Complete Streets.
