Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County is a research-based educational program assisting county residents in acquiring knowledge and making informed decisions that improve the quality of their lives, community and the environment.
The Mercer County Extension program is part of the statewide Rutgers Cooperative Extension that has offices located in all of New Jersey’s twenty-one counties. Administrative headquarters are located at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) /The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences). The Mercer County Board of County Commissioners, the State of New Jersey, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) fund the program.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension helps transmits practical information from the research conducted by NJAES, other land-grant colleges, and USDA, to the people of New Jersey. Base program areas include:
Agriculture and Resource Management
4-H and Youth Development
Family and Community Health Sciences
In addition, priority programs areas identified by our local stakeholders include agricultural viability, enhancing environmental resources, productive futures for youth, financial competence, strengthened families, and improved health through better nutrition, physical activity and food safety.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension reaches people through meetings, workshops, conferences, publications, electronic communication, distance learning and mass media. Thousands of Mercer County residents are reached through the combined efforts of professionals and volunteers (including the Master Gardeners of Mercer County) who provide educational programs, one-on-one consultations, and other educational and service activities. The Master Gardeners of Mercer County can be reached at 609-989-6853.
